What a night!

Wow. What a fantastic night this was, and what a huge difference all of you have made in Kenzo’s life.

Thank you ALL who came, performed, donated, and helped make this evening a tremendous success. Thank you to all the kids and families from Glenealy and Island Schools for all your fantastic work. Thank you to all the HKPhil musicians who offered such an eclectic program. Thank you to the HKPhil staff who came and helped with this event. Thank you to the University of HK for your support throughout the evening.

Through your generous help, “Playing for Kenzo” has now raised just over HK$1,000,000, with more than HK$575,000 of it having been contributed last night alone.

Every dollar will go directly to Kenzo and the Wilson family, and be used towards all the necessary treatments and operations he will need on his road to recovery.

It was truly a magical night, and we thank you for all that you have done!

Here’s to Kenzo!

Matching Grant Announced!

Dear Fellow Supporters,

My name is Andrew Simon, and I am the Principal Clarinetist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic.

Recently, along with many of you, I received a HK$6,000 Government Scheme Gift from the Hong Kong Government for doing nothing. It wasn’t a tax refund, it wasn’t earned and it wasn’t invested. I have already spent it and I cannot remember on what – perhaps a few movies or good meals.

I want a second chance at putting HK$6,000 towards something meaningful – something which I will always remember and which can make a serious difference in Kenzo and his family’s life.  Something which will enable my colleague Kaori to resume her musical contributions to the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the city’s cultural life.

I would like to announce a Donation Challenge where I will match your donations up to HK$6,000 to Kenzo’s Fund.

If you want to join me in putting this government gift to good use, please send your contribution to:

Hong Kong Philharmonic Society, Ltd., Level 8,
Attention: Kenzo Fund – Matching Grant

Make your cheques payable to: Y.S. Liu Foundation Ltd. This Challenge expires on October 22nd, so please have your cheques dated prior to that.  Be sure to mark Kenzo Fund Matching Grant on the envelope or the cheque.

I will toast you as I am spending the tax deduction from this donation on something fun!

Musically Yours,

Andrew Simon

About Kenzo Wilson

Like many kids his age, Kenzo Wilson is an energetic, fun-loving kid with a smile that will melt your heart.   He enjoys playing video games and soccer, is a cunning chess player, and loves heading out for a round of golf, often besting his dad.

In November of 2011, having just started his final year at Glenealy Primary School and  just shy of his 11th birthday, Kenzo was diagnosed with Leukemia.  A parent’s worst fear had now become a reality.  He was admitted into the hospital and celebrated his 11th birthday from the hospital bed.

Between November and February, Kenzo underwent three rounds of chemotherapy treatments.  Ever the optimist, Kenzo’s spirits remained high and unabated.  Between the rounds of chemo, Kenzo was able to return home, enjoy time with his family and friends, and continue his schoolwork.

There were days when he felt well enough to do normal everyday activities, and yet they would be followed by severe downturns and stays in the Emergency Room.  An unimaginable roller coast of emotions was becoming the daily routine for his family and friends.  Throughout the process, however, Kenzo never once uttered a complaint or lost his radiant smile.

In early 2012, Kenzo’s doctors determined that a stem-cell transplant was necessary for his recovery.  Remarkably, Kenzo’s sister Kohana turned out to be a perfect match, and so Kenzo and Kohana underwent the transplant process together in February of 2012.  Several tense months passed as doctors and family waited to see if Kenzo’s body would accept or reject his sister’s cells. By late Spring, there was finally some good news as it seemed the transplant was a success.  Kenzo was soon able to return home to his family with a bright ray of hope on the horizon.

Kenzo was looking forward to a full recovery.  Outside of regular hospital checkups, Kenzo spent his time at home cautiously guarding against infections.  He was able to graduate at the end of the school year along with his classmates.  His blood count was improving with every test, and he was eagerly looking forward to starting at Island School in August.

In June, however, he began having breathing difficulties.  After a month of hospital visits,  he was diagnosed with Bronchiolitis Obliterans, a debilitating condition of the lungs brought on by a complication from the stem cell transplant.   His condition has continued to deteriorate, limiting his movement and leaving him wheelchair-bound.

At the end of September, his condition deteriorated further, and he was admitted into intensive care at Queen Mary Hospital.  In order to help Kenzo with his breathing, it was necessary for him to be sedated and put onto a ventilator.

Kenzo is now in need of a lung transplant – an uncommon procedure in Hong Kong, further complicated by a lack of suitable donors.

To give Kenzo the best possible chance for survival, his family will need to move him overseas in order to find a suitable  donor and for him to receive the best possible medical care.

Kenzo the golfer

One of Kenzo’s passions in life is golf.  Along with his Dad, Kenzo has spent quite a considerable amount of time perfecting his game.   From the approach to the first tee box, to the last few inches of the putt on the last hole, Kenzo’s passion and respect for the game remains unbroken. Not even a hospital bed can keep Kenzo from getting into the game, as you can witness from one of his videos.

Kenzo was only 4 years old when received his first set of golf clubs as a Christmas gift from his Dad.  He caught on to the game quite naturally, and by the time he was 8 years old, he was taking golf lessons at the Australian Golf Academy in Hong Kong.

A year later, he began taking part in golf tournaments, and at only 9 years old Kenzo was a Runner-Up in the “Australian Golf Academy Under 11 Tournament”.

In the years that followed, Kenzo would join his Dad and his Dad’s colleagues for rounds of golf at Kau Sai Chau, often beating their scores.  The adults would even try to improve their own game by watching Kenzo’s swing and picking up tips for themselves.

Every Sunday, Kenzo’s Dad would take him to the SkyCity Nine Eagles Golf Course.  The regular games became a tradition for the pair, one which remained unbroken until Kenzo’s health deteriorated.

After he was diagnosed with Leukemia, Kenzo would continue to come out to play a few holes as his strength would allow him.  While his driving distance may have decreased slightly because of his condition, his accuracy and his absolute love for the game has never waivered.  Seeing just how much Kenzo was missing the game during his long stays at the hospital, his Dad snuck in a golfing video game, bringing a much needed burst of positive energy to Kenzo.

For some free golfing tips for yourself, have a look at his YouTube videos.  They just may come in handy during your next outing!
